Summer is drawing to a close, so I thought I’d share one of my favorite cocktails. It’s great for lounging on a patio, enjoying the nice weather.
Dark and Stormy
- 2 ounces dark rum
- ginger beer
- lime wedge
- Fill a highball glass with ice. Pour in rum. Add the ginger beer to taste. Squeeze in lime, then garnish with lime wedge. Stir to mix.
The Dark and Stormy is “Bermuda’s National Drink.” To be a “true” Dark and Stormy, you’re supposed to use Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and Barritt’s Ginger Beer, both of which are from Bermuda. I couldn’t find the Barritt’s, so I had to make do with Jamaican ginger beer.
I’ve seen many different listings of the correct proportions. I think it really depends on how spicy your ginger beer is–some pack quite a punch. Add some; if it’s not enough, add more.
Cheers!
That sure is a nice highball glass=D
Haha, I’m rather fond of them.
Until now I have been unable to confirm that Barritt’s was gluten free, but I assume since you call for it in your Dark & Stormy recipe that it is. So – cheers! I’m making Dark & Stormies tonight and have run out of my favorite ginger beer – Goya. I’ve never tried Barritt’s before, but picked one up out of curiosity recently. I’ll give it a go!
I received confirmation from Barritt’s that their ginger beer is gluten-free.
I’ve never actually tried Barritt’s before because I’ve never been able to find it. I’d love to hear how it tastes. Goya is quite spicy, I wonder how it compares.
Thanks for confirming. I don’t remember where I picked up the Barritt’s; I had never seen it before. It is sweeter than the Goya and doesn’t have the spicy-ness that you mention. It’s a bit smoother going down, but, personally, I like the kick – I’m sticking with Goya!
